The Beacon Resource Center functions as a part-time day shelter and community resource hub for individuals facing (or at risk of ) homelessness in York City. Initially designed as a refuge for unsheltered individuals and those in overnight emergency shelters to rest, receive mail, charge their phones, access restrooms, enjoy snacks, get their hair cut, meet with support services, and find respite from the elements; it has since grown to offer resources from community partners. These resources assist individuals in navigating the complexities of housing, employment, and healthcare services. The Beacon is graciously hosted by Union Lutheran Church.
Our Community Partners
Donating to The Beacon, a local drop-in center for homeless individuals, is a powerful way to make a tangible difference in your community. Your contributions directly support essential services such as snacks, drinks (hot/cold), hygiene facilities, and community partner resources that not only help meet immediate needs but also empower individuals to rebuild their lives. By donating, you become part of a compassionate movement that fosters hope and resilience among those facing homelessness. Additionally, your involvement could enhance your own sense of purpose and fulfillment, connecting you with like-minded individuals and creating a supportive network that champions social change. Whether through financial contributions, in-kind donations, or volunteer opportunities, your support at The Beacon can truly create ripples of positivity in the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community,

Staff members provide more than just refreshments to our beautiful people; they also foster authentic relationships and cultivate a vital sense of community.
“The Beacon is more than just a place to get out of the extreme temperatures! We are also a hub for unhoused and housing insecure people to connect with resources that can assist them with many of the barriers that keep them from basic human needs.”
-Nicolas McMichael (Beacon Supervisor)
We maintain a P.O. box at the beacon that acts as an essential contact point for individuals seeking assistance. This allows them to receive official documents and personal correspondence, ensuring they stay informed about vital resources and can foster a stronger support network.
We are excited to introduce our new program that provides onsite haircut services at the Beacon. We believe that looking good is key to feeling good, and one of our top priorities is to ensure that you leave feeling better than when you arrived.
